Project managers I speak with tell me they have limited time to get their project team introduced to each other prior to the actual start of the project. It is important to ensure the team has a chance to meet and get to know each other and each other’s skills/expertise before the actual kick-off date. There are four stages of team growth: Stage 1 Forming; Stage 2 Storming; Stage 3 Norming; and Stage 4 Performing. With limited time on your hands and the need to get to the “performing” stage as rapidly as possible to meet deadlines, how do you effectively and efficiently get the project team working together smoothly as if they have been together for ages?
A good resource on team building and leadership plus information on the four stages of team growth: The Team Handbook, 3rd Edition, Authors: Peter Scholtes, Brian Joiner, and Barbara Streibel.
Please share some other methods in the Comment field. Thanks!
