Hello Frode,
You know I had to include that option as I have no doubt many people do use coaches for that purpose. I, like you, have had promotions throughout the years with various employers with no salary increase attached to the promotion. Not every change comes with more money. I also agree that money alone rarely makes people happy – though I suppose there are exceptions! And like you, I wouldn’t turn down being rich! But there are more important things – both at work and in life. I have seen people stay in jobs where they were unhappy because they were given more money to stay; that doesn’t last long – eventually they move on – because money wasn’t the issue in the first place. I might suggest they use a coach to find out what they want out of a job. Hmm…there’s another option (although maybe we’d group that under “finding your next job”.)
Your coaching of young people sounds rewarding – and no doubt challenging! Getting some to go back to school is an accomplishment and something to be proud of – I agree that increasing knowledge and skills eventually brings around the money.
Thanks for your comment!
Best,
Gina
I can see that so far: “For negotiating a salary for a new job” is in the 2.place… I am so glad for “For determining how to be effective and continue to grow in your current job” – being in the lead. People must stop caring about money. I get a lot of hassle for saying so, but when money is you object you might end up unhappy. My salary is not important to me, I have had 3 promotions in the equal amount of time, and not once have I had any conversations about my pay. I would use a coach to become a better leader. My goal is to become the best possible leader, and everything I do is done in order to follow my objective as to grow as a leader. I do care about money, I am not rich, and I would love to be rich, but not by chasing the cash, but by chasing knowledge. I do believe that if I grow, the rest will follow. So your focus should be to be your best, and this will again give you your well deserved money.
So to my point, if someone would use me as a coach to gain more money, my first question would be: “What do you need to do to deserve this money?” – I do coach a lot of young people, and I do get some back to school – Hunger for knowledge is my motto!
Interesting question…
